It took me three times to finally get the tree I have been longing for – prunus avium plena. My quest started back in autumn 2020 when I ordered three trees from Loidl Baumschule. The trees, prunus serrulata Kanzan, liriodendron tulipifera and prunus avium plena were big and beautifully branched, and rooted well – however in spring 2022 prunus avium plena turned out to be, well … prunus avium. So I tried again in autumn 2024; and well, in spring 2025 the blossoms hinted again at a prunus avium. Which are great of course, but they sprout at every corner on my lot themselves, so no need to buy one of those!
This spring I received my third prunus avium plena – this time in bloom. And hurrah – finally! The blossoms look wilted – but are definitely the ones of avium plena. The prunus avium I planted in November 2024 I moved to another spot in my garden. So in all I had to dig four big holes to plant the one tree I really wanted for my personal spring enjoyment. I better look after it now to keep it alive.
