Spring prepping

Late autumn it is time to start preparing for spring – cutting back most of the perennials to be able to plant the spring bulbs. I leave some of the perennials and all the grasses; this year I also cut the echinaceas and tied them in a bundles to posts and plant supporters. This way the birds still are able to pick the seeds, insects can hide in the bundles, and I have easy access to them in spring to gather them. With the spring bulbs emerging from January on I can’t leave the cutting to late winter without damaging the shoots of the bulbs.

Every year I tell myself to cut back on the tulips since they get eaten by the voles, the rabbits and the deer. But then I just loose control over my ordering again – and the ones which survive the attacks from bottom, above, left and right are truly a joy once spring arrives. And this year I am also trying some in pots again
